Welcome to the Book Binders Chapter.
They are the one and only couples book chapter. They have 7 couples: Jane and Bill Adams, Linda and Frank Inciardi, Sharon and Barry Kaufman, Irene and Eliot Port, Gail and Lane Roosa, Norma and Charles Bose, & Karen and Jim Vitkus.
Karen Vitkus is the presider, she is gifted at keeping the discussion balanced. The men and women are not shy about sharing their opinions of the books they read.
Karen keeps things lively by giving everyone an opportunity to bring their selections to the group. They come with a title, author and short summary for the group. Selections are finalized by a majority vote. It’s not always a girlie girl book.
Not all books are great “couples” books, but this group works well together. They have been going strong since 2008. Last year they enjoyed comparing and contrasting two books by Bill O’Reilly, Killing Kennedy and Killing Lincoln.
I felt welcomed and enjoyed a special lunch with them. A nice breeze flowed through the house and the Solivita sun reflected off the lake giving us the perfect atmosphere for a good conversation. We gathered around and enjoyed a lively discussion on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Goldfinch, by Donna Tartt, all 771 pages!
I watched as they respectfully allowed the discussion to flow. One member expressed that the author, Stephen King, hailed Donna Tartt as a literary genius with a well-oiled style of building characters. Others shared that the story line seemed too long-winded even though the characters were well developed. I marveled at their mutual respect for each other. They all agreed that many of the characters story lines were unending. Without a doubt, none of them would recommend the book. I enjoyed the rapport and friendship between the female and male members, as they expressed their views on the same book.
She looks over at her husband to say, “Another murder mystery? Really?” He responds with a nod – just a nod.
I walked away from my visit with a new admiration for the Book Binders and thanked them for letting me join them.
Book Binders! Thanks for having me.
